Foxconn exported nearly all of its iPhones from India to the United States between March and May 2025, surpassing the 2024 average of 50 % and reflecting Apple’s strategy to avoid heavy US tariffs on Chinese goods, Reuters reported.

According to the data, Apple has redirected its India exports almost entirely to the US market, whereas previously the devices were supplied to the Netherlands, the Czech Republic and the United Kingdom.

Foxconn exported $ 3.2 billion in iPhones from India between March and May, with an average of 97 % delivered to the US, compared to a 2024 average of 50.3 %, according to customs data reviewed by Reuters.

In May 2025 Foxconn’s India facilities exported approximately $ 1 billion worth of iPhones to the US, the second‑highest monthly total on record, following a peak of $ 1.3 billion in March. Foxconn has shipped $ 4.4 billion in iPhones to the US in the first five months of 2025, exceeding its total for the entire year of 2024 ($ 3.7 billion).

This shift aligns with Apple’s efforts to bypass high US tariffs on Chinese goods. Previously, Indian‑made iPhones were distributed to markets including the Netherlands, the Czech Republic and the United Kingdom, but now they are almost exclusively directed to the US.

The redirection comes as Washington prepares to impose even higher tariffs on Chinese products. On Wednesday, June 11, 2025 President Donald Trump stated that China “will face 55 % tariffs” if a tentative plan to ease triple‑digit levies is finalised, pending approval from both leaders.

Trump Unhappy on India Expansion

US President Donald Trump recently expressed concerns to Apple CEO Tim Cook about the company’s expansion in India, urging him to halt plans to manufacture all iPhones for the US market there. “I had a little problem with Tim Cook yesterday. He is building all over India. I don’t want you building in India,” Trump said, referencing a conversation during his state visit to Qatar. He added that Apple would be “upping their production in the United States.”

These remarks follow reports that Apple aims to shift the majority of its iPhone production for the US market to India by the end of 2026. Apple, which still heavily relies on China for manufacturing, is diversifying its supply chain amid escalating geopolitical tensions and past disruptions such as China’s stringent Covid‑19 lockdowns. The trade conflict and tariffs imposed by Trump earlier in 2025 have further accelerated Apple’s efforts to reduce its dependence on China.
