The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)released its annual climate budget for the financial year 2025-26 on World Environment Day on June 5, allocating ₹16,321 crore or 37% of the total capital expenditure (capex) from this year’s annual budget.

In February this year, the BMC allocated its annual budget of ₹74,427 crore for 2025-26, out of which, ₹43,162 crore or 58% was earmarked as capex.

The climate budget will focus on activities related to environmental sustainability and climate change by taking up activities like urban greening, water resource management, and encouraging adaptation of clean energy, reported The Indian Express.

With the launch of the current climate budget, this marks BMC’s second consecutive year of coming up with a climate budget. For 2024-25, BMC had allocated ₹10,224 crore in its budget, which was 31% of last year’s overall capex.

Alongside this, the BMC has said that around ₹5.62 crore from the revenue expenditure will also be used as per the climate budget, cited The Indian Express. This year, a share of ₹15,048 or 88% has been allocated for water resources management and mitigation of urban flooding in Mumbai. BMC has further allocated ₹383 crore for urban greenery, ₹322 crore for sustainable waste management and ₹226.94 crore for transforming existing buildings into clean energy.

The budget document shows that ₹237.48 crore will be spent by BMC for integrated mobility, while BEST will spend ₹744.78 crore for the same. The BMC has raised its climate budget from last year’s ₹10,224.24 crore by including the Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport Undertaking (BEST) and seven additional departments, reported HT.

Most of the activities listed in the budget are old BMC plans due to their effect on climate change. In March 2024, the BMC also established a new environment and climate change department.
