Pakistan is carrying out shelling along the Line of Control (LOC) in Kupwara and Baramulla districts of Jammu and Kashmir on May 8, ANI reported, citing officials. Around the same time, eight missiles have been launched by it towards Jammu’s Satwari, Samba, RS Pura and Arnia

“Sounds of shelling and firing can be heard. Smoke was seen in the sky. There is a complete blackout. We have full faith in our army,” a resident of Jammu told ANI.

The missiles launched by Pakistan were reportedly intercepted and blocked by India’s Air Defence Units. The missile launches have sent shockwaves across the Union Territory, with blackouts and sirens heard across Jammu.

This development comes just a few hours after India’s foreign secretary Vikram Misri said the choice to de-escalate matters depends on Pakistan. In a second press briefing post Indian Army’s Operation Sindoor, Misri said India is not in favour of escalating tensions with Pakistan. Operation Sindoor was a response to the Aprill 22 Pahalgam terror attack.

“Our approach is not to escalate the situation, we only responded to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack...Pakistan escalated the situation, we only responded. Choice is with Pakistan,” Misri said at the briefing on May 8.
