Claude Down! Users Report Outage Across Chat, Code And API

Claude users reported problems accessing Anthropic’s artificial intelligence service, with outage reports rising sharply on Downdetector and complaints extending across Claude Chat, Claude Code and the API.

According to Downdetector, 41% of reported problems involved Claude Code, while 31% concerned Claude Chat and 19% related to the app. Users also reported login problems, website errors and latency.

The Downdetector chart showed reports rising sharply during the late morning and early afternoon on August 24, indicating a significant increase in complaints compared with the preceding hours.

Anthropic acknowledged the disruption on its service status page, saying it had identified the cause and that its engineers were working to restore normal operations.

Claude Chat, Code And API Affected

According to user reports on Downdetector, the issue was not limited to Claude’s main chatbot interface.

Technology commentator Alex Getman, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), said that Claude.ai, the Claude API, Claude Code and Claude for Workspaces, also known as Cowork, were experiencing degraded performance. Getman also said elevated errors were affecting several Claude models.

"Claude is having a massive outage Claude.ai, the API, Code and Cowork are all degraded, with elevated errors across Mythos, Fable, Opus 5 and Opus 4.8. Somehow one very large organisation remains completely unaffected," he said.

Anthropic, on its service status page, said, "We are investigating elevated errors on requests to Claude Mythos 5, Claude Fable 5, Claude Opus 5, and Claude Opus 4.8. We will provide an update soon."

Users Report Failed Requests

The disruption also drew complaints from Claude Max subscribers and developers on social media.

Some users faced intermittent access, while others were unable to complete prompts or API requests.

Developers using Claude’s API for production workloads also reported request failures and increased latency.

"I wonder if I'll see a downgraded performance or partial outage of my Claude Max bill," a user said on Downdetector.

Another user wrote, "Claude is going through a major series of outages over the last several hours that repeatedly knock tasks offline; those who have looped tasks or agentic workflows are undoubtedly running into dead ends tonight and will find their work undone in the morning."

Anthropic had not said whether the incident was linked to infrastructure problems, a software deployment or unusually high traffic.
