India’s ambition for Artificial Intelligence , semiconductor and quantum computing aligns with global geopolitical situations, creating a strategic opportunity to become the world’s third-largest economy, said BVR Subrahmanyam, CEO of NITI Aayog.

“Technologies like AI and quantum computing are disruptive forces. If India can effectively integrate them into everyday life, they will enhance efficiency, unlock potential, and open new gateways of opportunity”, said Subrahmanyam.

Subrahmanyam was speaking at an event held in New Delhi for the release of a paper on Quantum Computing. On Tuesday, in order to establish quantum supremacy, China launched Zuchongzhi 3.0, a quantum computer.

In a simpler manner, quantum technology works on a different principle than normal computers and that's what enables it to perform certain tasks with exceptional power and efficiency.

On the sideline of the event, Subrahmanyam told Outlook Business that the country needs to push its technological ambition to compete with nations like the USA and China, then only India can establish itself as a global technology leader.

NITI Aayog has also come up with ‘NITI Frontier Tech Hub’ which is a strategic initiative to converge R&D, stakeholders, government authorities, investors and common citizens to position India at the forefront of frontier technology.

Subrahamanyam also underlined ‘human centric technology’ as the key objective for India, ensuring that technology refine lives rather than overpowering humanity.

According to available data, countries like the USA and China are allocating billions of budget for quantum computing along with robust private and government contributions, In contrast, India has set aside a budget less than a billion.

“There is a lot of development happening in the quantum sphere. Different people are contributing to this field in different ways. Along with the government support, private investment is coming heavily in the sphere of quantum technology”, added Vinayak Godse, CEO, Data Security Council of India.

Highlighting the significance of quantum computing for national security, Godse said that quantum capabilities can unlock information beyond imagination, eventually empowering our armed forces and intelligence agencies.

India is rapidly accelerating its quantum technology efforts through both government and private initiatives. In the Union budget 2025-26, the Finance Minister allocated Rs 600 crore to the National Quantum Mission.

The National Quantum mission was launched in April 2023 with an objective to push quantum research across the country.

Recognising its potential, the Indian government is leveraging the technology to enhance public services for the common people.
