Vietnamese electric vehicle manufacturer VinFast plans to scale up its annual production in India to 150,000 units, with exports targeted for West Asia and Africa, PTI reported.

The company aims to start with an initial production of approximately 50,000 electric vehicles per year at its Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu facility, with plans to increase to 150,000 vehicles in the coming years based on market demand.

“We have targets to export the products to external markets, including the Middle East and Africa,” VinFast Asia CEO Pham Sanh Chau was quoted as saying.

Chau expressed enthusiasm for recruiting up to 3,500 people across India by 2030. The company has already interviewed nearly 400 fresh graduates from various universities in Tamil Nadu.

“By 2030, we expect to have up to 3,500 local workforce as part of our commitment to the state government,” he stated.

New EV Launch

VinFast plans to enter the Indian market in June 2025 with the launch of its VF6 and VF7 models, marking its entry into India’s growing electric vehicle (EV) market.

The company’s upcoming production facility in Tamil Nadu, built with a $2 billion investment, is expected to commence operations within weeks, starting with an annual capacity of 50,000 electric vehicles. VinFast aims to scale up production to meet local demand and explore export opportunities, potentially reaching 150,000 vehicles per year.

“We will be opening bookings for models VF6 and VF7 in June. We will also be announcing the price of the two cars,” Chau said, noting that the company will launch the VF7 first, followed by the VF6.

VinFast plans to introduce its VF6 and VF7 electric vehicle models in 33 cities across India, capitalising on the growing demand for EVs in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities while aiming to establish a strong brand presence nationwide. The company will expand its dealership network based on the potential of each city.

To promote EV adoption, VinFast intends to gradually develop EV charging infrastructure. Although not currently in active discussions with Indian companies for partnerships, CEO Pham Sanh Chau stated that the company “does not rule out the possibility of working together.” He also mentioned ongoing talks with various institutions to provide financing options for both customers and dealers.
