The heavy rainfall has battered Indian states from Assam and Tripura to Arunachal Pradesh, leaving 34 dead since May 28, according to The Hindu.

Over 3.64 lakh people across 19 districts of Assam have been affected by the floods that disrupted road transport and train services on June 1, 2025.

Tourists Stranded, Rivers Swell

Rest of the northeastern region also got impacted by mild to heavy rainfall, with floods and landslides battering more than 900 houses in Manipur and Mizoram. As per reports, about 1,500 tourists were left stranded in northern Sikkim.

On Sunday (June 1, 2025), Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke with the Chief Ministers of Assam, Arunachal, and Sikkim, and the Governor of Manipur to take stock of the situation.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma told The Hindu that Mr. Shah had provided all possible assistance to deal with the situation. “I have briefed him on the measures being taken. We are grateful for his concern and support,” he said.

Sarma also warned the population in Assam to be aware of the sharp rise in river water levels due to heavy rainfall at Kibithoo (17 cm), Hayuliang (15 cm), and Kalaktang (10 cm) in Arunachal Pradesh. “Assam is witnessing intense rain in Silchar (42 cm), Karimganj (35 cm), and Hailakandi (30 cm). People living in low-lying and riverbank areas are advised to stay alert and follow local advisories,” he added.

The relentless showers also forced the Northeast Frontier Railway to cancel several trains and submerged tracks in the Karimganj section of southern Assam’s Barak Valley.

The flood situation worsened on Sunday, with 10 major rivers flowing above the danger level and 78,000 people affected by the floods in more than 15 districts. Tripura also witnessed heavy to very heavy rainfall across multiple districts on Sunday and is expected to receive extremely heavy downpour in isolated areas till June 4.

As reported by The Hindu, the death toll in rain-induced landslides, floods, flash floods, and lightning across the northeastern region reached 30 since the night of May 29. According to data provided by officials in the affected States, 22 people lost their lives on Saturday (May 31, 2025). Eight of them were from Assam, seven from Arunachal Pradesh, four from Mizoram, and three from Meghalaya.

The heavy and continuous downpour in Sikkim led to a significant water level rise in Teesta River on June 1, 2025. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a red alert for June 1, 2025 in Assam and Meghalaya, warning states for heavy to very heavy rain in the region, reported The Indian Express. The MeT also issued an orange alert for Sikkim’s Gyalshing, Namchi, Soreng, Gangtok and Pakyong for the next 24 hours.

According to ANI, farmers were advised to postpone sowing of crops such as rice, maise, and jute, and avoid working in fields during thunderstorms in Tripura.
