The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Delhi-NCR till June 19, predicting thunderstorms accompanied by light to moderate rainfall, lightning and thundersqualls with wind speeds ranging between 50 and 60 kmph, particularly during the night, reported HT.
Temperatures in the national capital are expected to reach 35 degrees Celsius during the day, with the minimum likely to settle near 24.2 degrees Celsius.
The met department also forecast a moderate thunderstorm, intense lightning in open spaces which could consequently lead to traffic disruptions and likely delays to flight and train services. The alert also underscored threats to livestock and masses occupied with outdoor work.
IMD has urged residents to remain indoors and avoid non-essential travel. In addition, the weather office also advised residents to unplug electrical appliances during storms to safeguard against lightning-induced damage.
People have also been cautioned not to seek shelter under trees or metal structures and to refrain from using mobile phones in open areas during lightning activity. Farmers and those working outside have been told to suspend tasks and move to a safe location immediately.
Relief at a Cost
Heavy rainfall battered several parts of the national capital on June 16 bringing relief from prolonged heatwaves. Many areas experienced waterlogging and traffic congestion, reported TOI.
Considering the weather conditions yesterday, Delhi Airport issued travel advisory on X, alerting passengers that flight operations could be affected. As reported by TOI, around 12 flights were diverted at Delhi airport between 3 pm and 4 pm due to adverse weather conditions.
The IMD had issued a red alert for Delhi and nearby regions earlier, predicting thunderstorms followed by moderate to heavy rainfall and gusty winds reaching speeds of 50-70 kmph.
