India’s green transition will need millions of skilled workers, but the biggest talent gap may lie in less visible roles

When you are trained as a chemical engineer, nobody tells you that one day you will spend mornings reviewing soil sampling protocols, afternoons reading Python code, and evenings arguing over the wording of a legal clause.
Yet that is what building climate infrastructure actually looks like. Writing algorithms and methodologies decides whether a tonne of carbon dioxide has genuinely been removed from the atmosphere, and whether a farmer in Punjab, or a project developer in Gujarat, deserves to be paid for it.
It is the most interdisciplinary work that needs your attention, and precisely the kind this country will need millions of young people to do.
This year's World Youth Skills Day (July 15) theme, Skills for a Shared Future, deserved a more honest reading than it usually got. A shared future will not be built by any single skill. The United Nations' own framing points to a blend of technical, digital, green and social capabilities, and nowhere is that blend more real than in climate work.
The green economy is usually described through its most visible jobs: the solar technician on a rooftop, the wind farm engineer, the mechanic servicing an electric vehicle. These roles matter. But beneath them sits a quieter layer that determines whether the whole transition can be trusted, and it is chronically short of people.

The Mismatch
The scale of the opportunity is well documented. The Skill Council for Green Jobs estimates that India will need 35 million green jobs by 2047, with industry projections of more than seven million by 2028.
What is less discussed is the mismatch underneath. Studies show green job postings growing nearly twice as fast as the supply of green talent, and one national report found that only about a third of urban youth could even identify what a green job is.
We are attempting one of the largest economic transitions in history with a workforce that has not yet been told what the work involves.

Here is what it involves. Every carbon credit, every net zero claim, every rupee of climate finance ultimately rests on a chain of measurement, reporting and verification, or MRV.
Someone must define how a tonne of avoided or removed carbon is calculated. Someone must gather the evidence, from soil samples and reactor temperatures to satellite imagery and sensor feeds. Someone must audit it, register it, and guard the integrity of the market that trades it.
Carbon markets are often described as a finance story or a policy story. At their core, they are a trust story, and trust in 2026 is built by scientists, statisticians, software engineers and lawyers working on the same problem at the same table.
An entire family of careers is emerging here that barely existed a decade ago: carbon accounting, digital MRV engineering, remote sensing analytics, registry operations, methodology science, climate law, market integrity and climate finance.
There are organisations that build carbon standards and registries for the Global South. They practice methodologies that read like collaborations between disciplines because that is exactly what they are.
A biochar methodology is equal parts pyrolysis chemistry, sampling statistics and contract law. A cookstove methodology forces you to think about combustion efficiency, rural adoption behaviour and uncertainty mathematics in the same paragraph. A soil scientist and a software engineer argue for an hour about a rounding convention, and the credit that finally gets issued is better for it.
The Global South Opportunity
There is also a larger reason for young Indians to claim this territory. The Global South hosts the majority of the world's carbon projects, yet for decades it has largely imported its rulebooks, standards and verification systems from elsewhere.
That is changing, and India is unusually well placed to lead it. This is the country that built digital public infrastructure at population scale, and the same instinct applies to climate, where credits can be measured by sensors and satellites, recorded on transparent registries, and verified with published code rather than promises.
The young person who learns to build and interrogate such systems is not merely qualifying for a job. He/she is helping author the rules the generation will live under.
So what should a student or early professional do? Some unfashionably simple advice is to choose one climate domain, whether soil, energy, waste or mobility, and learn its science properly.
Then pair it with one skill from the digital and financial world: statistics, programming, accounting, law or data engineering. Study one carbon methodology from end to end; which are freely available and more instructive than most textbooks, and participate.
Standards bodies put draft rules through public consultation precisely so anyone can question them. One rigorous comment on a draft standard will teach more than a semester of lectures, and the field is young enough for a serious newcomer to leave fingerprints on it.
A shared future, in the end, is one whose ledgers are written by many hands. The climate transition will succeed or fail on whether its numbers can be believed, and the people who make numbers believable are made, not born.
Every young Indian must look past the rooftop and the turbine to the invisible machinery beneath: the meters, the models, the registries and the methods. That is where the shared future is being drafted, and there is a seat at the table waiting.
