Summary of this article
  • India’s electric two-wheeler sales jumped 59% to 1.78 lakh units.

  • West Asia conflict pushed consumers toward EVs amid fuel price concerns.

  • TVS, Bajaj, Ather and Hero posted strong double-digit sales growth.

Around 1.78 Lakh units of electric two wheelers (E2Ws) were sold in till March 31, marking a 59% jump from 1.12 sales registered in February. The shift in consumer interest in buying E2W was triggered by the ongoing West Asian conflict.

According to Inc42, this is the most E2W sales in a month, which is a big deal since sales have been stagnant for months. In the middle of all this, many of the biggest manufacturers saw their sales grow by double digits.

The top spot holder since last year, TVS recorded a 47% month-on-month (MoM) increase in sales in March to 46,859 units. TVS recently launched a battery subscription model across its entire electric scooter range, which includes its flagship TVS iQube.

In addition, the company also released the Orbiter V1 electric scooter earlier this month. The model is priced at ₹49,999 if the subscription model is availed rather than buying the battery upfront. This is to encourage more people to use electric vehicles, which are usually more expensive than ICE vehicles.

Meanwhile, Bajaj’s E2W sales surged 68% in March to nearly 43K units. By launching an affordable electric variant of its classic Chetak scooter in January, the OEM has helped Bajaj in regrowing its consumer base after losing the market’s top spot to TVS late last year.

Ather Energy, the third largest E2W maker, also saw a 19% rise in monthly sales to 33.6K units as it focused on making cheaper options. The company also plans to release a scooter that is cheaper than the ones it already sells in the next few months.

Hero MotoCorp’s electric scooter sales surged nearly 59% to 19,764 units from 12,597 last month, boosted by its Vida range battery-as-a-service model that lowers the initial purchase cost.

Electric Two-Wheeler Market

The electric two-wheeler market in India is now the biggest part of the country's electric vehicle (EV) sales, making up more than half of all EV sales. This is because more people are choosing cleaner ways to get around as fuel prices rise and infrastructure improves.

In FY25, E2Ws made up over 50% of total EV sales, highlighting their dominant role in India’s EV transition and reflecting broader consumer and policy-driven momentum behind electrification.
