Northeast region of India has become a new investment interest for giants like Reliance Industries and Adani Group, with conglomerates announcing outlays worth Rs 75,000 crore and Rs 50,000 crore, respectively. At the Rising Northeast Investors Summit on Friday, Adani Group chairman Gautam Adani announced a fresh Rs 50,000 crore investment in multiple sector-related projects, including green energy, roads and highways, digital infrastructure and capacity building via skilling and vocational training centres.

“Three months ago in Assam, we pledged an investment of Rs 50,000 crore. Today, once again humbled and inspired by your (Prime Minister Narendra Modi) leadership, I announce that Adani Group will invest an additional Rs 50,000 crore across the Northeast for the next 10 years,” said the Adani Group chairman.

Billionaire Duo’s Big Bet

Billionaire Gautam Adani highlighted that the investment would focus more on people by prioritising local jobs creation, entrepreneurship and community engagement.

“But more than infrastructure, we will invest in people. Every initiative will prioritise local jobs, local entrepreneurship and community engagement. This is what Viksit Bharat 2047 is all about,” said Adani.

Speaking at the same event, RIL boss Mukesh Ambani said the proposed Rs 75,000 investment will be utilised by Reliance Retail to increase procurement from the region and focus on energy generation, particularly solar power. The projects will create over 2.5 million direct and indirect jobs.

“In addition to creating over 2.5 million direct and indirect employment opportunities, we aspire to touch the lives of most of our 45 million sisters and brothers in the northeast,” said RIL chairman. The oil-to-telecom conglomerate said investment will help the northeast region to achieve growth like Singapore and Malaysia. The company has planned to work with all eight states in the region to build Olympic Training Centres. Additionally, the Mukesh Ambani-led conglomerate has partnered with Mizoram University for breast cancer-related treatment using genomic data.
