With the EV manufacturer Tesla’s entry expected soon in India, Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) has once again come into limelight. The central business district of Mumbai, which is being considered as a potential location for Elon Musk-led Tesla’s India operations, is a home to various multinational companies.
Some companies like Jio, Apple, Netflix, Amazon, Twitter, Facebook, WeWork, CISCO, Pfizer, Google Cloud, Google India and others have office spaces in one of the costliest commercial districts in India. Others such as Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre, Gucci, Versace, Dior, Louis Vuitton, and Emporio Armani have their showrooms.
This time, Tesla is reportedly ready to set up its retail store in BKC --- situated in the financial capital of India. As per CNBC-TV18 reports, Tesla showroom may have nearly 5,000 square feet space in BKC. These stores will only be focused on selling imported vehicles; after-sales services will not be available at these locations for now.
Why Do Global Giants Choose BKC?
One after another, global giants like Apple, Google and Tesla are entering India through Mumbai’s BKC. Interestingly, it has become a prime destination for such companies due to its proximity to the airport, modern infrastructure, luxury hotels and status as a ‘central business district’ of Mumbai.
However, about three decades ago, the area between Bandra and Kurla was nothing more than a marshland along the Mithi river. Today, it has come a long way and become one of the prime commercial districts of Maharashtra’s capital city.
It is located at the centre of the western and eastern parts of the financial capital. The area which enjoys connectivity with South & Central Mumbai is connected to the Western Express Highway, Bandra-Worli Sea Link, international airport, Eastern Express Highway, and Eastern Freeway roads.
Not only businesses, even regulatory bodies like Sebi (Securities and Exchange Board of India) are also located here. Besides offices, BKC is also about its people. From celebrities to finance moguls and tech innovators, the presence of these people creates a culture of ambitions.
And fine dining at restaurants like Bastian, Yauatcha, Hakkasan, and Masque can cost over Rs 5,000 per person. It can be said that BKC has been designed for a premium consumer base.
Last month, the area made headlines for its record-breaking highest ever commercial lease transaction in India. Apple India has leased 6,526 sq ft of space in BKC at a monthly rental of Rs 738 per sq ft, setting a new benchmark in the country's commercial real estate market.
