India is set to welcome its own web browser, further boosting momentum towards developing its indigenous internet stack, said Ashwini Vaishnaw, Minister of Electronics & Information Technology on Wednesday.

The IT minister awarded Sridhar Vembu-founded SaaS unicorn Zoho the first prize in a contest to build an indigenous web browser.

“The first key point is the shift in mindset. Previously, product development was largely confined to certain government institutions. Now, we are embracing a broader, more inclusive approach—bringing together academia, startups, students, and researchers to collaborate on innovative solutions. Talent from all sectors must unite to drive progress across industries’’, said Vaishnaw.

Government organised the Indian Web Browser Development Challenge (IWBDC) to develop indigenous browsers in which Academia, startups, students, and researchers responded enthusiastically.

According to the MeitY, 58 entries were received and after a thorough evaluation process,  three winners were shortlisted. Followed by Zoho, Team Ping & Team Ajna secured second and third place respectively.

While awarding the winners, the IT Minister mentioned that the trend is changing now as winners are coming from tier-2 & tier-3 cities as well.

A web browser serves as the gateway to the internet, enabling essential activities such as web surfing, email access, eOffice usage, and online transactions. The development of India’s own browser brings several advantages, including enhanced data security and privacy compliance with the Data Protection Act.

It ensures that the data of Indian citizens remains within the country, strengthening digital sovereignty. Additionally, the browser will be compatible across multiple platforms, including iOS, Windows, and Android, offering a seamless and secure user experience.

Vaishnaw added, “We must now evolve into a product-driven nation. While the service industry remains a vital part of our economy and must continue to grow, it is equally important to establish ourselves as a product-centric nation.”
