Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday inaugurated American electric vehicle giant Tesla’s first showroom in the country at Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC). Fadnavis welcomed the Elon Musk-owned EV maker, saying they had “arrived in the right city and state — Mumbai, Maharashtra.”
“It is a matter of great joy for us that Tesla has launched its first experience in India in Mumbai. Tesla is establishing a logistics and servicing system here. Four major charging stations are also being set up by them. I am happy that Tesla chose Maharashtra, as the state has become a leader in electric mobility. Tesla is launching its Model Y in India. Maharashtra has the most dynamic electric mobility policy. I believe Maharashtra will be a preferred destination when they decide to begin manufacturing in India,” he told reporters later.
Located at Maker Maxity Mall, the 4,000-square-foot Tesla 'experience centre' will begin selling Model Y cars. Tesla is launching the rear-wheel drive (RWD) and long-range RWD versions of the Model Y in India. The standard RWD model is priced at ₹59.89 lakh, while the long-range variant is set at ₹67.89 lakh.
Factoring in additional costs — including a ₹50,000 administration and service fee with 18% GST — the on-road prices come to ₹61.07 lakh for the standard RWD and ₹69.15 lakh for the long-range version, according to the company’s official site.
Buyers can further personalise their Model Y with a range of optional features and add-ons, which will affect the final price. One such option is Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) capability, available at an extra cost of ₹6 lakh.
Internationally, the Model Y starts at $44,990 (approximately ₹38.63 lakh) in the US, 263,500 yuan (about ₹31.57 lakh) in China, and €45,970 (around ₹46.09 lakh) in Germany. Compared to these markets, the Indian pricing is considerably higher, mainly due to steep import duties and shipping charges.
In India, the Model Y RWD will offer both 60 kWh and 75 kWh battery pack options. Powered by a single electric motor delivering around 295 horsepower, the 60 kWh version claims a WLTP range of up to 500 km, while the long-range version can reportedly reach up to 622 km per charge.
Customers will be able to choose from seven exterior colours and two interior themes. The car also features a 15.4-inch touchscreen in the front, an 8-inch screen at the back, power-adjustable front seats and steering wheel, dual-zone climate control, 19-inch crossflow wheels, a panoramic glass roof, and an automatic rear liftgate.
According to reports, Tesla plans to soon open a showroom in Delhi. The company has also ramped up its workforce in India. However, an earlier statement by a Union minister clarified that the company has not yet revealed any intention to begin manufacturing in the country.
