In a first in the renewable space in India, a 648-megawatt (MW) solar project at Kamuthi in the southern state of Tamil Nadu has been connected to the national transmission grid by ABB. The solar photovoltaic project — made up of five plants in a single location — is the largest of its kind in the world. Currently, 360 MW from the solar project, owned by the Adani Group, is grid-connected. At full capacity, this facility will account for nearly 10% of the country’s current solar capacity of around 7 gigawatt (GW). With the country looking at 100 GW of solar power by 2022, aimed at diversifying its energy mix and minimising environmental impact, it seems like a good start.
