While China remains one of the fastest growing economies in the world, when it comes to two-wheelers, India has overtaken the Dragon as the world’s biggest two-wheeler market. Two-wheeler sales in India hit 17.7 million in the just concluded fiscal in comparison to 16.8 million units sold in China. The growing infrastructure in rural India, rising income and easier finance options are fuelling the boom. In the case of China, two-wheeler sales have been declining for a couple of years after touching a high of 25 million units, as locals switched over to cars. However, electric two-wheelers are growing in popularity. Indonesia follows China with an annual sale of approximately 6 million units. The current leader in the Indian scooter market, Honda believes the industry will continue to grow by 9-11%. Other premium brands Royal Enfield, Harley Davidson and Triumph Motorcycles too are eager to cash in on the demand. Looks like the fun has just begun.
