Honda announced the expansion of its fourth production unit at the Vithalapur in the Ahmedabad district of Gujarat by adding another production line with an outlay worth Rs 920 crore on May 22. The fourth production line will be built by Honda’s motorcycle production and sales subsidiary in India, Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India Private Limited (HMSI). The plant with an annual production capacity of 6,50,000 units is likely to kickstart production in 2028, the company said in a statement.

Honda has planned to make the newly proposed production line one of the company’s largest assembly plants for motorcycles in the world. HMSI is eyeing to generate 1,800 new jobs and ramp up the total production capacity to 2.61 million units.

“The new line slated for production in 2028 will have an annual production capacity of 6,50,000 units, bringing the total capacity of the fourth plant to 2.61 million units, making it Honda’s largest assembly plant for Honda motorcycles in the world,” the company said.

The announcement was made at Honda’s factory in Gujarat on the day when the company celebrated the production milestone of having reached 500 million two-wheelers from 1949 till May 21.

“With the additional investment in our fourth plant, Honda will continue to deliver attractive products and services to its customers around the world who have higher expectations and trust in the company, and further solidify its Indian motorcycle business,” said President & CEO, HMSI, Tsutsumu Otani.

HMSI began production in India in 2001 and has since then rapidly expanded its operations. Honda’s production company currently has four plants in India, including Haryana’s Manesar, Rajasthan’s Tapukara, Karnataka’s Narasapura and Vithalapur in Gujarat, with a total annual production capacity of 6.14 million units. As of April 2025, the cumulative production volume touched 70 million units.
