Zomato’s founder and CEO, Deepinder Goyal on Monday shared an X post, highlighting a point in their latest shareholders’ letter. In the post, Deepinder shared some data regarding the earnings and benefits of Zomato’s delivery partners.
The founder revealed that over 15 lakh delivery partners chose to work with Zomato’s food delivery business in 2024. He shared three important data points regarding the delivery partners: first, a flexible and reliable source of secondary income; second, a steady increase in earnings; and third, financial protection in times of need.
Elaborating on these data points, he revealed that delivery partners working at least eight hours per day earned an average monthly income of approximately Rs 28,000 in 2024. Even after accounting for estimated fuel costs (around Rs 5,000 per month), this income remains highly competitive compared to other opportunities available to gig workers.
He further added that all delivery partners onboarded with Zomato are automatically covered under the company’s delivery partner insurance policy, which includes accident, death, and health coverage, among other benefits. He disclosed that claims paid to partners have exceeded Rs 53 crore annually, with 55% of 2024 claims covering non-accident medical expenses.
Kunal Kamra’s Call Out
At the start of this year, stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra called out the quick commerce start-ups, accusing them of exploiting their gig workers.
Kamra in his X post, called these quick commerce platforms landlords who do not own any land. He alleged that these platforms offer their gig workers the freedom that they can’t afford while giving them wages that can’t meet their aspirations.
Kamra in another X post demanded for some data points from these platforms. He demanded the platforms to reveal the number of delivery partners enlisted, number of hours they put in, their annual earnings and more.
Budget 2025 for Gig Workers
In the Union Budget 2025, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced significant measures to support gig workers in India. The government plans to provide gig workers with identity cards and register them on the e-Shram portal, facilitating their access to social security benefits.
The gig workers will also be covered under the PM Jan Arogya Yojana, granting them healthcare benefits with free treatment up to Rs 5 lakh. According to the government, these initiatives are expected to benefit nearly 1 crore gig workers across the country.
