The much-talked about Dharavi redevelopment, Mumbai’s mega slum revamp project worth ₹15,000 crore, is expected to begin from May. The Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (Mhada), the nodal agency for developing land that belongs to government or semi-government agencies, will first build 344 houses for slum dwellers in sector 5. As per the development plan, the slum cluster in central Mumbai will be spread over five sectors. Of the 62 hectares in sector 5, work will be carried out on 7 hectares of land owned by Mhada. Since 2004, the revamp has been in limbo following issues over the eligibility of slum dwellers and the financial proposition for developers. But the new state chief minister Prithviraj Chavan set the ball rolling this year by making Mhada the nodal agency for developing government land. It remains to be seen whether private realtors will jump into the fray for developing land within the 535-acre pocket.
