PM designate Narendra Modi with Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders Rajnath Singh and Amit Shah at the bank of the river Ganga in Varanasi, shortly after the BJP-led NDA received a thumping mandate at the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. Modi is all set to take oath as India’s next prime minister, winning the most decisive victory the country has seen in more than a quarter century and sweeping the Congress from power. The NDA has secured 336 seats in the Parliament, far ahead of the 272 needed to prove majority; although with its admirable lead, the BJP hardly needs the support of its alliance partners as far as key decisions go. The markets, which were on an upswing in anticipation of a Modi victory, reacted suitably to news of the win, with the Sensex hitting an all-time high of 24,363 and the rupee trading at an eleven-month high of 58.59.
