There is a new multi super-specialty hospital in Chennai, and this time it’s run by the government. The city has become the hub for the Indian medical tourism industry, which is set to touch ₹9,500 crore by 2015, and attracts 45% of overseas health tourists. An addition to the list is the Tamil Nadu Government Multi-Super Speciality Hospital, recently inaugurated by chief minister J Jayalalithaa via video conferencing after a two-year wait. The hospital has 14 operation theatres across six floors, 20 dialysis units and 400 beds. The behemoth on the Omandurar Government Estate was constructed by the earlier DMK government as an alternative location for the secretariat and served its purpose till the Jayalalithaa-led AIADMK came to power in 2011. Under the latter’s orders, the secretariat moved back to Fort St George and the 1 million sq ft building was converted into a hospital at a cost of ₹143 crore. Looks like with general elections round the corner, the TN supremo has found another way of feeling the pulse of the people.
