Maharashtra has thrown open its first fully automated border check post in the country at Dapcheri in Thane district on National Highway 8 at the Maharashtra-Gujarat border. Sadbhav Engineering, with other consortium partners, was awarded the ₹1,571-crore modernisation project of 22 border check posts by the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation in 2009. The project involves setting up three mega, two big, seven medium and 10 small check posts on build, operate and transfer basis for a concession period of 25 years. The check points will have combined facilities for clearance and checking of commercial traffic for all three state departments (transport, sales tax and excise) to reduce clearance time. The RFID tags affixed on an approaching vehicle’s windshield will instantly retrieve from a central database details regarding the vehicle — tax, insurance, permit, pollution and driver — thus allowing border officers to make quick decisions. Besides, electronic weighing bridges at the post will detect overloading of goods without harassment to drivers. The check-post, which has 15 lanes for traffic towards Gujarat and nine towards Mumbai, also has rest-rooms, medical facilities and a canteen for drivers.
