Waaree Energies has secured environmental product declaration (EPD) certification for its bifacial MonoPERC and TOPCon solar panels, becoming the first Indian solar panel manufacturer to publish independently verified EPDs, stated a company release on December 30. Certified under the International EPD system, these declarations are based on life cycle assessments conducted by Syphera Solutions, a provider of enterprise sustainability management software, data and consulting services.

These EPDs quantify the environmental impact of the company’s solar panels from raw material extraction to end-of-life disposal. Both panel types are designed to reduce environmental footprints.

According to the solar manufacturer, its MonoPERC panels have an efficiency of around 21 per cent and a power rating of 550 watt-peak (Wp) with a life cycle carbon footprint of 0.447 kg of carbon dioxide equivalent per watt-peak (CO₂ eq/Wp). TOPCon panels, on the other hand, have an efficiency of around 22 per cent and a power rating of 600 Wp, with an ultra-low-carbon footprint of 0.368 kg CO₂ eq/Wp.

“Our EPDs set a new benchmark for sustainability in the renewable energy sector. By combining cutting-edge technology with sustainable practices, we empower stakeholders to make informed decisions for a low-carbon future,” said Amit Paithankar, chief executive officer, Waaree Energies.

Paithankar added, “This milestone aligns with our vision of delivering innovative, high-performance solar solutions while contributing to global Net Zero ambitions and advancing India’s leadership in renewable energy,”

The development aligns with the company’s efforts to integrate renewable energy sources and sustainable practices in manufacturing. Waree Energeries offers solar solutions such as panel manufacturing, engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services, project development and rooftop systems.

Headquartered in Mumbai, Waaree Energies is one of the leading manufacturers of solar PV modules in India with the an aggregate installed capacity of 13.3 gigawatts (GW). It operates five manufacturing facilities with one factory each, located at Surat, Tumb, Nandigram and Chikhli in Gujarat, and the IndoSolar Facility, in Noida, Uttar Pradesh.

In November, company’s board approved an investment of up to Rs 600 crore in its wholly-owned subsidiaries for setting up and developing infrastructure for renewable power projects and bidding pipeline. The board had also floated the idea of manufacturing electrolysers for green hydrogen and set up manufacturing plants for lithium-ion advanced chemistry storage cell and energy storage system. At that moment, the company had said that it would come up with a detailed plan and investment for the two projects in the next two months.
