Banks will remained closed on Tuesday, January 14, in some parts of the country on account of Makar Sankranti, Uttarayana Punyakala, Maghe Sankranti, Magh Bihu and the Birthday of Hazrat Ali, according to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Calender.
On January 14, all banks and their branches are closed in some states, such as Gujarat, Karnataka, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Sikkim, Assam, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Arunachal Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh.
Makar Sankranti is celebrated under various names across different cultures in India, such as Khichdi, Pongal, Uttarayan, and the Kite Festival. While it is a public holiday on which many banks remain closed, the closure is not uniform across all states or cities.
In addition to Makar Sankranti on January 14, banks in Chennai will also be closed on January 15 and 16. January 15 is celebrated as Thiruvalluvar Day, and January 16 marks Uzhavar Thirunal, both of which are observed as holidays in Tamil Nadu's capital. In Kolkata, Agartala, and Bhubaneswar, banks will remain closed on January 23 in observance of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Jayanti and Veer Surendra Sai Jayanti.
Additionally, as per the regular schedule, banks across the country will be closed on the fourth Saturday of the month, which falls on January 25.
January has a total of 13 bank holidays, which includes public holidays, regional holidays, and regular closures such as Sundays and the second and fourth Saturdays of the month. Notable festivals in January include New Year’s Day, Sri Guru Gobind Singh’s Birthday, and Makar Sankranti. These holidays reflect a mix of national and regional observances, along with regular closures in the banking sector.
While Makar Sankranti is a public holiday in several states and banks observe the day off, the Indian stock exchanges operate on a different schedule.
For traders and investors the Indian stock markets will remain open for trading on January 14, as per the BSE and NSE list of holiday calendar 2025.
