ICICI Bank has sharply increased the minimum average monthly balance (MAB) for savings accounts across all branch categories, with new thresholds applying to accounts opened after 1 August 2025.

In metros and urban areas, the MAB requirement has risen to ₹50,000 from the previous ₹10,000, according to a circular issued on Saturday.

Semi-Urban & Rural Thresholds Increased

The minimum balance for semi-urban branches has been raised to ₹25,000 from ₹5,000, while rural branches will now require ₹10,000, up from ₹2,500. Pensioners, however, are exempt from these charges. The steep revision is expected to significantly affect account holders, particularly in rural and semi-urban regions.

Customers failing to meet the MAB will be charged 6 percent of the shortfall or Rs 500, whichever is lower. In family-banking arrangements, the family must collectively maintain 1.5 times the eligibility criteria; otherwise, individual members will be charged if they fall short of their personal MAB requirement.

Service Charges Overhauled

The bank has also revised service charges on transactions. After three free cash deposits or withdrawals at a branch or via a machine, each additional transaction will incur a fee of ₹150. Cash deposits via machines during non-banking hours or on holidays will attract a ₹50 fee per transaction if monthly deposits exceed ₹10,000.

For ECS/NACH debit returns due to financial reasons, the bank will levy ₹500 per instance, capped at three charges per month for the same mandate.

Outward cheque returns will cost ₹200 per instance, while inward cheque returns will attract ₹500 for financial reasons and ₹50 for non-financial reasons, excluding signature verification. Transactions declined at another bank’s ATM or POS due to insufficient funds will result in a ₹25 charge per instance.
