After a four-year hiatus, Tata Motors unveils two new offerings to take on competition

The most awaited auto extravaganza of the country — Auto Expo 2014 – kicked off at Greater Noida’s India Expo Halls in the first week of February. In a year dubbed as the worst in the past decade for the auto sector, companies didn’t shy away from launching or unveiling almost 70 new models, against 58 in 2012. But it was interesting to watch Tata Motors, after a four-year hiatus, unveil two new models — the hatchback Bolt and the entry-level sedan Zest. Tata has been conceding market share to rivals — down to 8.5% in December 2013 from 14% in FY12 as passenger car sales fell 35% in 9MFY14 to an all-time low. Whether the new models help turn around the domestic fortunes of the country’s second-biggest automobile manufacturer, which till now has been riding the JLR wave, remains to be seen.
