India has emerged as a forerunner in adoption of mobile commerce as compared to rest of the world

Honestly, when was the last time you shopped or at least window-shopped on a phone app? Was it yesterday, an hour ago or a few minutes ago? Unless you have been living under a rock, you would know that Indians are increasingly shopping through their smartphones. The recent mCommerce report by PayPal and IPSOS finds that we love mobile-optimised shopping way more than our global peers — 70% of us versus 43% of the world. Therefore, businesses here are quickly changing their models to draw ‘m-buyers’. A large majority of the sellers (81%) have optimised their retail back-end to accept mobile payments and nearly half (45%) have listed mobile optimisation as a priority. People everywhere like buying things on their phone because it is easier and saves time, and we are no different. Our favourite mobile apps are those for bill payments, given the boom of GPay, Amazon Pay, Paytm; purchasing fashion, especially on Amazon, Flipkart and Myntra; and food discover/delivery, which has two big players — Zomato and Swiggy. We also run apps that help us shop across borders, and the only reasons we don’t splurge on them are the slow loading of a page or security concerns.
