Trump Eases H-1B Visa Worries, Birthright Citizenship Stirs Doubts

While Trump has set aside the fear of many eyeing to enter America through H-1B visas for work, his executive order to end birthright citizenship in the US has given a jolt to those planning to settle in America with families

US President Donald Trump

President Donald Trump’s America has space only for competent and great people via the H-1B visa programme. Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, Trump mentioned his liking for both sides of the argument on H-1B visa workers and appreciated how the programme has brought the best people across different professions in America.

“...We want competent people coming into our country. And H-1B, I know the programme very well. I use the programme... wine experts, even waiters, high-quality waiters, you’ve got to get the best people. People like Larry, he needs engineers, NASA also needs...engineers like nobody’s ever needed them,” Trump said, according to PTI.

The H-1B is a temporary and non-immigrant visa category that allows foreigners to work in “specialty occupations” in America.

Trump’s camp has been divided on the issue of H-1B visa programme, one side his close allies, like Tesla CEO Elon Musk have backed the workers coming and on the other, his supporters have opposed the scheme, citing the reason that it takes away jobs from Americans

Trump Ends Birthright Citizenship

While Trump has set aside the fear of many eyeing to enter America through H-1B visa for work, his executive order to end birthright citizenship in the US has given jolt to those planning to settle in America with families. The executive order titled “Protecting the Meaning and Value of American Citizenship” signed by Trump on the first day of his second term has stripped away the right to get automatic citizenship for children born in the US to non-citizen parents. As per the new order, at least one of parents have to be an American citizen.

Prior to the order, anyone born on American soil was automatically given US citizenship irrespective of the citizenship status of the parents.

Under the new rule, the US can deny citizenship, including passports, to those children born in America after February 20.

The rule is also set to discourage “birth tourism” in America. Birth tourism refers to expecting mothers traveling to the US on a valid visa, give birth to children to obtain automatic American citizenship.

Trump’s new policy, curbing birth right citizenship in America, has already met with a backlash and nearly 18 out of the total 50 American states including, New York and New Jersey, have filed a lawsuit challenging the order.
