Anand Mahindra Gives Mantra for More Growth as India Becomes World's 4th Largest Economy

Mahindra Group chairman Anand Mahindra appreciated the milestone achieved by the Indian economy of becoming the fourth largest in the world. The Mahindra Group boss, in a social media post on May 25, said that the idea of India taking over Japan’s economy looked both distant and audacious back in his college days. The achievement is a result of contributions made by millions of Indians across sectors, generations, and geographies. 

“When I was in business school, the idea of India overtaking Japan in GDP felt like a distant, almost audacious dream. Today, that milestone is no longer theoretical—we've become the world’s fourth-largest economy,” said Anand Mahindra on X.  

Although Indians should celebrate the milestone, they should also remain dissatisfied for more growth, he added. He emphasised the importance of economic reforms, including governance, infrastructure, manufacturing, education, and capital access for India to continue rising.

“But as we celebrate, we must stay dissatisfied. Because India’s next leap must be in per capita GDP, not just overtaking Germany,” said the Mahindra Group chairman. 

His post comes after the NITI Aayog CEO BVR Subrahmanyam, citing a report by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), said that India has become a $ 4 trillion economy, surpassing that of Japan. Speaking at the Governing Council Meeting on May 24, NITI Aayog CEO said that in the coming two-three years, India would overtake Germany to become the third largest economy. 

“We are the fourth largest economy as I speak. We are a $ 4 trillion economy as I speak, and this is not my data. This is IMF data. India today is larger than Japan,” said the NITI Aayog CEO. 

The IMF in its recent report, mentioned that the nominal GDP for fiscal year 2026 is estimated to reach $ 4,187.017 billion, marginally more than the likely GDP of Japan, which is estimated at $ 4,186.431 billion.
