Leadership Shift! Flipkart Loses Another Top Talent to Quick Commerce, Ex-VP Joins Blinkit

Quick commerce platforms have gone beyond giving tough competition to ecommerce giants in terms of business, they have also attracted Amazon and Flipkart’s top leaders to their companies. One such latest example of talent shift is Flipkart’s Vipin Kapooria, according to a report published by MoneyControl. The former vice-president of Flipkart's business finance has joined Zomato-owned Blinkit as its chief financial officer (CFO).

As per his LinkedIn profile, Kapooria has worked with Walmart-owned Flipkart for more than seven years. He is a chartered accountant (CA) with over 16 years of experience in total. Besides Flipkart, he has also worked with OYO and Yum! Restaurants --- a company that operates KFC, Pizza Hut, Raco Bell, and others in India. Now, he will closely work with Blinkit CEO Albinder Singh Dhindsa, Zomato CFO Akshant Goyal.

His hiring comes days after Zomato raised Rs 8,500 crore through QIP, of which Rs 2,137 crore will be used for the expansion of Blinkit. In addition, it has also launched a 10-minute food delivery app ‘Bisto’ to compete with Zepto Café and Swiggy’s Instacafe/Bolt.

Notably, this is not the first time a senior leader from ecommerce platform shifts to the quick delivery businesses. The quick commerce and food delivery companies have been tapping into the talent pool of ecommerce firms to scale their operations across other categories like beauty, fashion, jewellery, etc.

Talent Shift trend

In the past few months, Swiggy has hired several top executives from Flipkart, including Hari Kumar G (former Flipkart VP, now Swiggy SVP and CBO for its Instamart segment), Amitesh Jha (former Flipkart SVP, now Swiggy Instamart CEO), and Shalabh Shrivastava (former Flipkart VP, now SVP of Driver Org at Swiggy).

To note, Swiggy has recruited executives experienced in non-grocery roles. This comes at a time when Swiggy is also expanding its offerings and moving beyong grocery and other essential items. The platform has piloted services across categories like gifts, apparel, beauty, electronics, toys, and more.

Not just Flipkart, Swiggy has also gone after Amazon employees. It has roped in Sairam Krishnamurthy from More Retail, a joint venture between Amazon and Samara Capital. Krishnamurthy is now SVP and COO of Swiggy Instamart. The list doesn’t end here! Other appointments include Anirban Roy who headed performance marketing team at Amazon, is now serving as its vice president.
