IndiaAI Mission Empanels About 19,000 GPUs, Plans to Develop 6-8 LLMs: Vaishnaw

In a bid to strengthen India's artificial intelligence (AI) ecosystem, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced on January 30 that the government's IndiaAI Mission has successfully empaneled around 19,000 graphics processing units (GPUs) from various data centres, including a significant number of high-end units.

GPUs are semiconductor chips used for AI computation. 

Vaishnaw also said that the government is looking to aid the development of 6-8 LLMs (large language models) by the Indian tech ecosystem.

“The empanelment of 19,000 GPUs marks a critical step in our AI journey. These resources will be instrumental in developing indigenous LLMs tailored to India's diverse linguistic and economic needs,” he stated.

LLMs, which form the backbone of generative AI applications, require vast computational power and large-scale datasets for training. By leveraging these GPUs, IndiaAI aims to create AI models that can drive advancements across sectors. 

The initiative aligns with India’s broader digital transformation strategy, ensuring the country remains at the forefront of AI-driven technological evolution. Experts believe that developing homegrown LLMs will reduce dependency on foreign AI models and pave the way for customized solutions catering to India's unique requirements.

With the IndiaAI Mission gaining momentum, the government is set to collaborate with academic institutions, research organizations, and industry leaders to accelerate AI adoption and innovation. This milestone underscores India’s ambition to become a global AI powerhouse, fostering technological self-reliance and economic growth.
