India shouldn't look at AI (artificial intelligence) as a disruptor for its young workforce but something that will boost its output, according to Union Minister Jayant Chaudhary.
“We are not looking at AI as Artificial Intelligence but as ‘Augmented Intelligence’ which means it is going to add efficiency in everyone’s job. As much as our young employees use AI tools and get AI ready, they will contribute effectively,” the Union Skill Development minister told Outlook Business.
“Let’s not look at new technology as a challenge or disruptive technology but let’s learn from it and utilise it towards our best,” he added.
When asked whether AI will lead to job displacement or create new employment opportunities in India, Chaudhary responded that as young employees embrace AI tools and become AI-ready, they will contribute effectively to their respective roles across various sectors.
Presently, India is highly inspired to become the global leader in AI and tech space; establishing its foundational model and becoming the powerhouse of semiconductor are some of its major goals to achieve. Young Indians are seen as the country's greatest hope for achieving these ambitious goals. However, a crucial question remains: Are we truly prepared to steer this rapidly evolving technological force? In response, the Union Minister stated, “India already contributes 60% of the global AI workforce, producing a vast number of coders, engineers, and professionals with technical and scientific expertise. That is why I have full faith that India will be a leader in AI space.”
The widespread adoption of AI and machine learning can only be achieved if students and professionals actively practice and apply these technologies.
As per the Union Minister, The Indian government's focused approach to skilling the younger generation will play a crucial role in positioning India as a global AI leader.
“In the last budget, our ministry's allocation was Rs 3,300 crore, which has now increased to Rs 6,100 crore in the current budget. Our young leaders are highly sought after due to the strong work ethic and high standards of the Indian workforce. This will lead us to become ‘Global Skill Capital”, said Chaudhary.
