India has reached the milestone of 100GW solar energy capacity, Minister of New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi said on February 7, highlighting the country's target of achieving 500 GW renewable energy capacity by 2030.

"Under the visionary leadership of Hon'ble PM Shri @narendramodi ji, India has achieved the historic milestone of 100 GW solar capacity. This achievement is powered by our relentless commitment to a cleaner, greener future," Joshi said in a post on X.

As per the post on X, India added 2.82 GW of solar capacity during 2004-14 under the UPA government. This is compared with 100 GW during 2014-2025.

As of January 31, 2025, the country's total solar capacity stood at 100.33GW, with 84.10GW under implementation and an additional 47.49GW under tendering, according to the ministry.

"Initiatives like solar panels, solar parks and rooftop solar projects have brought about revolutionary changes. As a result, today India has successfully achieved the target of 100 GW of solar energy production. In the field of green energy, India is not only becoming self-reliant but is also showing the world a new path,” said the minister.

Earlier, India had planned to achieve 175 GW of renewable energy capacity, including 100 GW of solar power by 2022. However, it could not be achieved due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and the subsequent lockdown restrictions.

India’s installed renewable energy capacity passed 200GW in 2024, marking a 170% increase in more than a decade. Solar PV modules have led the charge with 98GW installed capacity by the end of the last year. Government schemes such as PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana (PM-SGMBY) and PM Kisan Urja Suraksha Utthaan Mahabhiyan Yojana (PM-KUSUM) have supported the rise.

The Union Budget 2025 has increased the funding to Rs 10,000 crore for the development of solar infrastructure, including solar parks, rooftop solar installations and off-grid solar solutions. The production-linked incentive scheme for solar module manufacturing has also been extended for another five years, with an outlay of Rs 24,000 crore.

Moreover, the government has reduced customs duties on critical components such as solar inverters, batteries and mounting structures to make it cost-effective.

A new scheme called Surya Ghar Yojana 2.0 has also been introduced which aims to install rooftop solar systems in 10mn households over the next three years. A subsidy of up to 40% for installations have been offered including provisions for low-interest loans to encourage residential adoption.
