The sale of electric cars posted a strong growth of about 80% year-on-year in June 2025 with 13,178 units sold in the month, showed data released on Tuesday by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (Fada).
With this, the share of electric cars in overall car sales during the month rose to 4.4% from 4.1% in May and 2.5% in June 2024.
According to Fada President C S Vigneshwar, schemes like PM eDrive have helped in making EVs accessible and affordable.
“Electric mobility is gathering unprecedented momentum across all segments, underpinned by the PM eDrive Scheme’s mandate to make electric vehicles more accessible and affordable,” he said in a statement released by Fada.
Tata Motors, with over 35% market share, continued to remain the leader and sold 4,708 electric cars during the month, a rise of 2.48% YoY. It was followed by JSW MG Motor with 30% market share, displacing Mahindra & Mahindra to the third place with about 23% market share.
While MG Motor posted a growth of 168% in electric car sales YoY, Mahindra saw a rise of a staggering 523%. However, on a month-on-month basis, the former had a modest 5.5% growth and the latter had a rise of 15% in EV sales in June.
While Tata Motors remained the largest player in the electric car segment, its market share has declined from over 62% in June 2024 to about 35% last month. The company has ceded the ground to MG Motor and Mahindra, whose market share has risen from 20% and 6% in June last year to 30% and 23% in June 2025.
Tata Motors had posted a decline of 18% YoY in EV sales in the month of May, selling 4,351 units during the month. On the other hand, its closest competitor JSW MG Motor had reported a growth of 149% YoY with 3,765 electric cars sold while Mahindra & Mahindra had come in at the third spot with 2,632 units.
In the electric two wheeler segment, over 105,355 units were sold in June, rising 31% YoY and 5% month on month. With this, the share of electric two wheelers in overall two wheeler sales rose to 7.3% from 5.8% during the same period last year and 6.1% in May 2025.
According to Vigneshwar, this showed growing consumer confidence in EV technology.
TVS Motor has grabbed the biggest pie of the segment with 24% market share, selling 25,300 scooters out of the total 105,355 scooters sold in June 2025. The company posted a sales growth of 80% YoY and about 3% month on month.
With 23,032 units sold last month, Bajaj Auto came in second. Ola Electric, once the market leader of the electric two wheeler market, sold 20,190 scooters during the month, a decline of over 45% YoY. However, it registered a growth of 9.13% on a month on month basis.
