Generative artificial intelligence giant OpenAI is planning to formally set up an office in the Indian capital, New Delhi later this year, the company said on Friday.

In a release published by several outlets, the ChatGPT maker said the office reflects its commitment to “build AI for India, with India” in partnership with the government. It also aims to support the country’s IndiaAI mission.

According to OpenAI, India is its second-largest market after the United States and one of its fastest-growing. Over the past year, ChatGPT users in India have grown more than fourfold, with the country hosting the largest population of students using the platform worldwide.

"The level of excitement and opportunity for AI in India is incredible. India has all the ingredients to become a global AI leader—amazing tech talent, a world-class developer ecosystem, and strong government support through the IndiaAI Mission. Opening our first office and building a local team is an important first step in our commitment to make advanced AI more accessible across the country and to build AI for India, and with India,” said CEO Sam Altman.

According to reports, the company is yet to finalise the exact location for its New Delhi office, but hiring has already begun. The local unit is currently being led by Pragya Misra, Lead for Public Policy and Partnerships in India, who joined the company in April 2024, as per her LinkedIn profile.

OpenAI has listed three sales roles in India requiring at least seven years of experience, and more positions may be advertised in the future, according to Bloomberg.

This move comes just days after the company launched an India-specific ChatGPT Go plan priced at ₹399, offering a more affordable way to access higher usage limits for the chatbot.

Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, Railways and Information Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw welcomed OpenAI to India, calling the decision a reflection of the country’s "growing leadership in digital innovation and AI adoption".
