Apple Exports from India Nearly Doubles to Rs 20,000 Cr in March FY25 Ahead of US Tariffs Storm

Apple Inc.’s exports of iPhones from India have nearly doubled from Rs 11,000 crore in March of FY24 to Rs 20,000 crore in the same month of FY25.The major chunk of these exports was to the US ahead of President Donald Trump’s tariffs announcement on April 2 or ‘the liberation day’. The overall exported iPhones increased from Rs 85,000 crore in FY24 to Rs 1.5 lakh crore in FY25, the Economic Times reported, citing preliminary export data. 

The January to March quarter in FY25 has been stronger in terms of iPhone exports compared to the same quarter in FY24. iPhones worth Rs 48,000 crore were exported in Q4 FY25 compared to Rs 28,500 in Q4 in FY24.

iPhones are only manufactured in India and China, and both these countries have been slapped with 26% and 54% tariffs by the US President, respectively. As Trump’s tariff announcement has shaken the world, the iPhone maker is yet to decide its next move. 

“While the worst-case scenario plans will be built in, no company will take any knee-jerk reaction in terms of moving its supply chain around for the next six-eight weeks,” ET reported, citing an industry executive. 

Apple had already started moving its manufacturing units away from China to India in 2024, likely due to the potential threat of a trade war between the US and China. Powered by the Indian government’s production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme, Apple’s manufacturing units’ expansion in India has got a boost.

A report earlier this year highlighted that Apple is holding talks with Kalyani Group’s Bharat Forge for manufacturing components like mechanics for the iPhone maker in the country. 

“Apple is looking to work with some of the biggest Indian companies and talks have commenced with Bharat Forge, located in Pune, Maharashtra,” the ET reported, citing a source. 

Pegatron, the second largest iPhone manufacturer in the country after Foxconn, had forged a partnership via a joint venture with Tata Electronics. Noida-based Motherson Group also had joined forces to boost manufacturing.
