The power of supercomputing

India’s fastest supercomputer Param Yuva II

The Centre for Development of Advanced Computing has unveiled India’s fastest supercomputer, Param Yuva II, in Pune. The supercomputer will be used for weather forecasting, seismic data analysis and scientific data processing. The earlier version, Param Yuva, was engaged in weather forecasting for over 58,000 villages and this number will now double, thanks to the new version. This is the first supercomputer in India to have crossed 500 teraflops in computing power and will also prove useful for research labs, aircraft designing and institutions engaged in scientific research. The ₹16-crore project, involving around 300 C-DAC engineers, was executed in a record of three months. The next big innovation in the works at C-DAC is a petaflop capacity supercomputer slated to be launched by the end of 2013.
