As global leaders and business stalwarts gathered at the World Economic Forum in Davos to discuss major issues ranging from the world economy to climate change, there stood 193 snowmen — representing the countries of the world — adorned with their respective country’s scarf flags to remind attendees about the millennium development goals (MDGs). An initiative by various organisations and individuals, including the likes of Bill and Melinda Gates, Malala Yousafzai and Sue Desmond-Hellmann, this installation aims to draw the world’s attention to pressing issues such as poverty, injustice, inequality and climate change. Their aim is to ask world leaders to focus on sustainable development in 2015. The snowmen became immensely popular on social-networking sites thanks to the hashtags #snowmanselfie and #action2015, as attendees came forward to show their support through a selfie with the frozen figurines.
