The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has yet again shown its prowess by launching a Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (MK-II) with an advanced weather communication satellite (INSAT-3DR) and placing it in the desired orbit successfully. The launch now puts India among the handful of nations that has the capability to send satellites weighing over two tonne into the geo orbit where the world’s communication satellites are parked. The global satellite launch services market is estimated at $5 billion of the total satellite business worth $330 billion. What’s make the launch impressive is the fact that it was powered by an indigenously developed cryogenic engine technology. The space body is now planning to develop another engine, which will be twice as powerful as the present one. More importantly, ISRO is confident of launching two to three GSLV missions every year and has now set its sights on a mission to Venus!
