Inspire trust: For delegation to be effective, you must create an environment of trust. Employees should feel comfortable enough to discuss, interact, question, give different perspectives and present opposing views.

Clarity in communication: When delegating, you should articulate your expectation clearly. Also encourage the employee to ask any question that s/he may have on the task at hand. This helps bridge any gap in communication and ensures that both of you are on the same page.

Freedom to execute: After having defined the expectation and broadly agreeing on the outcome, create an environment that gives the person freedom to execute. Micromanaging can be counterproductive. But ensure that you are available if the person needs you at any point in time.

Process check: To ensure that the person to whom the task is assigned is on track, look into the progress they are making from time to time and help them course correct only if required.

Celebrate failure: Irrespective of the outcome, celebrate success and failure. Keep learning from what works and what does not. Success is easy to appreciate but failure too should be looked at as a learning experience. Operate by the philosophy ‘if you can’t fail, you can’t learn’.
