Zomato, recently rebranded as Eternal, announced on Saturday that Rinshul Chandra, the company’s Chief Operating Officer (COO), had resigned. The details were disclosed in an exchange filing with the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE).
"Chandra resigned on April 5 'to pursue new opportunities and passions,'" Zomato stated in the announcement.
In his resignation letter addressed to Zomato founder and CEO Deepinder Goyal, Chandra wrote, "I am writing to resign as COO - Food Ordering & Delivery Business of Eternal Limited, effective April 7, 2025. After careful consideration, I have decided to pursue new opportunities and passions that align with my evolving personal and professional goals".
Zomato has not yet appointed a successor to the departed COO. The resignation comes at a time when the foodtech company’s senior leadership is undergoing changes. Akriti Chopra, the company’s cofounder and Chief People Officer, left in September 2024 after being with the company since 2011.
"In December 2024, Hemal Jain, Zomato’s head of business finance, also resigned after a six-year tenure to 'explore other opportunities.'"
This news comes after the foodtech giant terminated over 500 customer care employees just days ago, as part of a shift toward AI-driven automation and intensified competition in rapid commerce.
The layoffs coincide with the introduction of 'Nugget,' an AI-powered customer support platform developed in-house over three years. Nugget currently manages around 15 million monthly interactions across Zomato’s platforms, including Blinkit and Hyperpure, and is capable of resolving up to 80% of customer inquiries without human intervention.
According to current and former Zomato employees, staff from the Zomato Associate Accelerator Program (ZAAP) in Gurugram and Hyderabad were forced to resign without an official layoff notice.
Several former Zomato executives have ventured into entrepreneurship after departing the startup. According to Inc42 data, approximately 60 former Zomato employees have founded more than 50 startups across diverse sectors, including healthtech, aviation, and lifestyle.
Ex-Zomato leaders such as Gaurav Gupta, Surobhi Das, Akriti Chopra, and Mohit Gupta are concentrating on building their own companies, contributing to Zomato’s emergence as the 'Zomato mafia.'
