Elon Musk’s Tesla announced on Monday that its first batch of V4 Superchargers has begun operating in China, serving Shanghai, Chongqing, Gansu and Zhejiang provinces.
The EV maker revealed that the superchargers will be gradually installed in Beijing, Guangdong province and other Chinese cities, and they will be available to other electric‑vehicle brands.
Tesla is also reportedly preparing to launch its first showroom in Mumbai, India, as early as mid‑July 2025. The initial batch of Tesla vehicles, including Model Y rear‑wheel‑drive SUVs, has already been shipped to India from the company’s China factory. This marks Tesla’s long‑awaited entry into the Indian electric‑vehicle market at a time when the company is facing sales challenges in Europe and China.
Following the Mumbai showroom launch, the next will be in Delhi. In addition to vehicles, Tesla has imported Supercharger components, car accessories, merchandise and spare parts from the US, China and the Netherlands, according to a document cited by Bloomberg.
This move comes as Tesla has intensified its focus on the world’s third‑largest automobile market in recent months. Tesla’s Model Y is the world’s best‑selling electric car. Five Model Y vehicles have reportedly arrived in Mumbai from Tesla’s China factory, declared at ₹2.77 million each, and incurred import duties exceeding ₹2.1 million consistent with India’s 70 per cent tariff on fully built imported cars under $40,000, plus surcharges, according to documents cited by Bloomberg.
Tesla has launched a limited self‑driving car service in Austin, Texas, marking a significant milestone in its autonomous‑vehicle programme. Company leaders, including Elon Musk, have emphasised that the autonomous technology unveiled is critical to Tesla’s future success.
The service, currently exclusive to Tesla‑invited early adopters, operates a fleet of approximately 10–20 2025 Model Y SUVs in a designated area of South Austin. Rides are available daily from 6:00 a.m. to midnight through a Tesla‑developed robotaxi app, with a Tesla staff member serving as a “safety monitor” in the right‑front passenger seat.
Terms of service shared by invited riders on X indicate that the service “may be limited or unavailable in the event of inclement weather.” During this invite‑only phase, rides are priced at a nominal $4.20, as announced by Musk on X on Sunday.
