Food and grocery delivery start‑up Swiggy has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Labour and Employment to list gig job opportunities on the government’s National Career Service (NCS) portal.

The agreement, signed in the presence of Union Labour Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya and Minister of State Sushri Shobha Karandlaje, aims to generate over 12 lakh job opportunities through the NCS portal in the next two to three years.

“Under this MoU, Swiggy will integrate its gig opportunities—including delivery, logistics and support roles—onto the NCS portal. This real‑time integration will enhance visibility of gig jobs for NCS users, who will benefit from timely and verified work opportunities across urban and semi‑urban areas,” the ministry said in a statement.

Under the MoU, Swiggy will leverage real‑time API integration to post verified delivery, logistics and support roles directly on the NCS portal, streamlining job listings and applicant tracking. The initiative emphasises inclusive hiring, with targeted efforts to create opportunities for youth, women and flexible workers.

Union Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya described this as a “win‑win model,” noting that Swiggy gains access to a diverse, skilled talent pool while enhancing job visibility for seekers across India. The NCS portal, with over 1.25 crore active job seekers and 40 lakh registered employers, plays a pivotal role in labour mobilisation.

Gig Economy

Swiggy, operating in over 500 cities across India, has significantly contributed to job creation, particularly in the gig economy. With approximately 50 million positions already available on its platform, this partnership is expected to enhance connections between job seekers and employers. The Memorandum of Understanding aligns with the government’s broader initiative to collaborate with private organisations to address labour market gaps.

The Indian government’s initiatives to promote the gig economy coincide with heated debates within the country’s start‑up ecosystem. Earlier this month, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal triggered controversy by stating that food delivery platforms like Zomato and Swiggy are transforming unemployed youth into cheap labour.

“Food delivery apps are turning jobless youth into cheap labour so the rich can eat without leaving home,” Goyal remarked during his speech at the Startup Mahakumbh event.
