It’s philanthropy of a different kind. Instead of merely cutting cheques in favour of non-governmental organisations and philanthropic institutions, the rich are warming up to impact investing. There is an increasing awareness among the elite that to create a positive and sustainable difference in society, they need to back enterprises that are self-sufficient, economically viable, and socially relevant. The growing interest in microfinance, clean energy, affordable housing and sanitation projects are clearly the favourites among HNIs. A chunk of the investments in the sector is coming through PE while the more adventurous are opting for the venture capital route.
