TCI-IIMB Supply Chain Sustainability Lab Becomes India’s First Organisation to Receive ISO Certification

The TCI-IIMB Supply Chain Sustainability Lab at the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB), founded in collaboration with Transport Corporation of India Ltd (TCI), has become the first organisation in India to achieve ISO 14083 certification for its digital platform, the Transportation Emissions Measurement Tool (TEMT). This certification shows that the platform can accurately measure greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from freight transportation activities, helping companies track, manage and reduce their transportation-related emissions to meet sustainability goals and regulation.

In India, the transportation sector contributes about 14 percent of the country's total GHG emissions, with freight transportation making up nearly 40 percent of CO2 emissions within this sector. Without cleaner technologies, transportation emissions are expected to increase significantly by 2050. The TEMT tool plays a key role in addressing this problem by providing an accurate way for organisations to measure their emissions and take timely action.

ISO 14083, developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is a global standard for calculating GHG emissions from transport operations. It applies to all modes of transport including road, rail, air, maritime and inland waterway. It covers both fuel combustion and electricity consumption. It helps organisations follow a standardised method for calculating and reporting emissions.

The National Industrial Corridor Development Corporation (NICDC), a subsidiary of the National Industrial Corridor Development Corporation (NICDC) under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry, has integrated ISO 14083's emission data into its logistics platform called the Unified Logistics Interface Platform (ULIP). This allows users to easily calculate emissions from their freight activities, promoting transparency and sustainability in logistics. By using this data, companies can make informed decisions to reduce their carbon footprint, including shifting to more sustainable transport options.

Girish Kumar Surpur, CEO and Director, NICDC Logistics Data Services Ltd, mentioned that ULIP’s Carbon Emissions API, developed in collaboration with - TCI-IIMB Supply Chain Sustainability Lab at IIM Bangalore empowers trade and logistics players to measure the environmental impact of their transportation activities. He further highlighted that by calculating emissions and data sources available with ULIP, companies can develop tools necessary for informed, actionable decisions on sustainability including modal shifts. "Together, we can drive meaningful change towards a lower-carbon logistics ecosystem," Surpur added.

TEMT is an online platform that helps businesses measure emissions across all modes of transportation. It uses India-specific data and allows companies to track emissions for both past and future shipments. The tool allows users to compare emissions from different transportation modes and store data in the cloud for easy monthly tracking and year-over-year comparison. It works for all types of shipments and provides reports in PDF and CSV formats.
