The country’s solar module manufacturing capacity nearly doubled, rising from 38 GW in March 2024 to 74 GW in March this year
India has achieved nearly 35% increase in its renewable energy capacity addition in the financial year 2024-25 as compared to the last year, Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi said at a press conference on Tuesday. Over the previous one year, the country has added around 25 GW of renewable energy capacity and that marks a sharp rise from previous year’s 18.57 GW.
The Union Minister also mentioned that the renewable capacity addition was spearheaded by the solar sector with solar capacity addition rising from 15 GW in FY24 to nearly 25 GW in FY25. Further, the country’s solar module manufacturing capacity nearly doubled, rising from 38 GW in March 2024 to 74 GW in March this year.
This year has also witnessed the country’s first ingot-wafer manufacturing facility, which has began its production. Additionally, the Ministry noted that under the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for high-efficiency solar PV modules, an investment of Rs 41,000 crore has been made leading to the employment of nearly 12,000 people in this sector.
While addressing the media, the Union Minister also specified that from April 1, one percent blending of compressed bio-gas will be mandatory in CNG (transportation) and PNG (domestic) segments. “This is a big step being taken to further decarbonise the transportation and domestic household sector,” Joshi added.
Under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, which crossed 11 lakh installations by March 2025, around Rs 5,437 crore has also been disbursed as Central Financial Assistance to over 6 lakh beneficiaries, in a bid to encourage the adoption of rooftop solar.
Referring to the National Green Hydrogen Mission, the Union Minister further stated that seven pilot projects were funded under the mission, with Rs 454 crore being allocated for decarbonizing the steel sector. “Additionally, five pilot projects in the transport sector, with Rs 208 crore in funding, will introduce 37 hydrogen-fueled vehicles and nine hydrogen refueling stations,” he mentioned.
While listing the renewable energy sector’s achievements for the last financial year, the Minister also said that India will soon become the third-largest renewable energy capacity holder in the world. “We are not only optimistic but very confident also,” he added.
