The Centre has reduced sugar inventory limits for bulk consumers to 15 days from September 1 through November 30, covering large users such as beverage makers, confectioners and food processors.
Retail sugar prices rose 13% year-on-year to ₹52.30/kg, while prices in some markets have reached ₹58-60/kg amid rising festive demand and supply concerns.
Opening stocks for the 2026-27 sugar season could fall below domestic requirements, raising concerns over supply even as the government seeks to curb inventory accumulation and price pressures.
