The Supreme Court sought the Centre’s response on a PIL requesting import curbs on yellow peas, citing their impact on Indian farmers’ livelihoods.
Yellow peas, mostly imported, are used in India as a substitute for pulses like tur/arhar, chana, and moong, while abroad they are largely cattle feed.
The PIL argued that cheap imports at ₹35/kg undercut domestic MSP of ₹85/kg for pulses, harming farmers.
Expert bodies, including the agriculture ministry, Niti Aayog, and CACP, have recommended restricting yellow pea imports and boosting local pulse production.
The petition seeks to set aside notifications allowing unrestricted imports and to mandate that imported yellow peas be sold at or above MSP.
