The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy issued an advisory on August 21 instructing state governments and power sector enterprises to offer a maximum four-month deadline waiver for green energy ventures. This regulatory relief applies to installations where the scheduled commissioning or supply deadlines occur on or after February 28, 2026, reports said.
The mandate covers project targets that already include previous timeline relaxations.
Authorised renewable energy implementing agencies, which include SECI, NTPC, NHPC and SJVN alongside state power departments, will evaluate and grant these extensions.
Currently, over 150 GW of renewable power infrastructure is being built across India. However, the ministry has not disclosed the names of the developers or details of the projects eligible for the extension.
Transmission and Connectivity Relief
The ministry also urged the power ministry and the Central Transmission Utility of India to extend corresponding leniency.
It asked these departments to waive financial penalties and suspend rigid connectivity obligations for the duration of the extended timeframe.

Project developers actively lobbied for these measures after the ongoing West Asia crisis fractured international supply networks.
These global disruptions severely compromised the procurement and cost stability of crucial raw materials, most notably copper and aluminium, which are essential for manufacturing renewable energy hardware.
Contractual Force Majeure Rules
The new guidelines advance an earlier directive. A July 6 advisory previously instructed state agencies to process delay claims using a Department of Expenditure memorandum circulated on April 29.
That earlier document established that the West Asia situation qualifies as a war under standard force majeure definitions.
Industry groups initially pushed the government to apply a universal timeline relaxation across the entire sector, similar to concessions granted elsewhere.
"Developers had sought a blanket extension for affected renewable energy projects, citing a recent advisory issued by the ministry of housing on a four-month extension for eligible real estate projects.
MNRE has decided that extensions for renewable projects should be granted by the concerned agencies in line with the force majeure provisions of the PPAs and the contractual procedure," a ministry official said.

Standard power purchase agreements typically categorise war as a valid force majeure event. Furthermore, standard bidding guidelines dictate that these contracts must clearly specify the corresponding relief protocols.
