Nitin Gadkari Unveils ₹3,000 FASTag Annual Pass to Ease National Highway Travel

India will roll out a FASTag-based Annual Pass from August 15, 2025, to ease highway travel, Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari announced on Tuesday. Priced at ₹3,000, the pass will be valid for one year from the date of activation or for up to 200 highway trips—whichever is reached first.

This pass is designed exclusively for non-commercial private vehicles such as cars, jeeps and vans. Users can activate this service through Rajmarg Yatra App as well as on the official websites of NHAI and MoRTH.

"The Annual Pass will enable seamless and cost-effective travel across National Highways throughout the country. A dedicated link for activation and renewal will soon be made available on the Rajmarg Yatra App as well as on the official websites of NHAI and MoRTH," said Gadkari. He added that the pass directly addresses long-standing complaints regarding toll plazas located within 60 km of each other, which have often caused friction and delays.

The minister stated that the initiative is expected to significantly cut down wait times at toll booths, minimise disputes over charges, and ease congestion—offering a smoother and more efficient travel experience for private motorists across the country.

FASTag was mandated by the Government in February 2021. As of March 2024, over 98% of toll payments at these plazas are made through FASTag, underlining the system’s widespread adoption.

Currently, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) oversees the maintenance and management of over 70,000 km of the country’s 1,50,000 km National Highway network. In accordance with the National Highway Fee (Determination of Rates and Collection) Rules, 2008, user fees (tolls) are levied on approximately 45,000 km of highways and expressways. These tolls are collected at around 1,200 toll plazas, operated either directly by NHAI or through private concessionaires.
